Life and Food Yacon Syrup

Disclosure: I got this product as part of an advertorial.

Did you see the episode of Dr Oz where he discussed the benefits of Yacon syrup?  Yeah, neither did I. Had to do the research for myself and they sound quite promising. I’d also not known about prebiotics to be honest, but i’ve learned that this is something that we should be consuming, and it’s one of the reasons yacon syrup is good for you. I’ll get more into the benefits shortly, but I wanted to be sure to recommend Life and Food brand yacon syrup, a specific brand that I had the pleasure of reviewing. I feel confident recommending this particular brand because it is certified organic and contains no gluten, artificial ingredients, gmo’s, fillers, preservatives or wheat.

Okay so on to the benefits. Chances are you’ve heard of probiotics. Many people depend on yogurt to supply their bodies with them. It’s especially important to add them if you’ve been recently prescribed antibiotics, because antibiotics kill the good bacteria in your body along with the bad ones, and so the good ones need to be replaced. I learned that good bacteria is delicate and can be killed by heat and stomach acids. Go figure. Prebiotics on the other hand are specialized plant fibers that can not be digested by our bodies and once they arrive in the gut they promote the growth of good bacteria. Yacon syrup is a good source of prebiotics.

Other benefits of Yacon syrup include the ability to assist in weight management. Since it contains fructooligosaccharides, it acts as a fiber that helps to enhance digestion. It’s also said to help control the appetite. It’s a better sweetener for those with diabetes and is said to help restore renal activity. It has also been found to be a great source of antioxidants.

The consistency of Yacon Syrup is much like a thick syrup. A lot like molasses. I was concerned that I wouldn’t like the taste, but it’s actually not bad. While i’ve seen others compare the taste to that of molasses, i’d personally compare it to a sweet reduction of prunes if there’s any such thing. Really not bad. It can be taken as is or even added as a sweetener to drinks such as tea and coffee.

Life and Food Yacon syrup can be purchased from the Life and Food website or from Amazon.com.
